Acharacle Primary School and Acharacle Community Company are joining forces on an exciting tree-planting project.
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Everyone across the UK is being invited to plant trees from October 2021, when the tree-planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.
To mark this occasion the Woodland Trust are providing trees to be planted all over the country; these trees will be mapped and together they will form the Queen’s Green Canopy. This will create a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate, now and for the future.
The Eco Committee has secured 420 trees for community planting - the project will support the teaching of the importance of trees, how to look after our natural environment, alongside practical skills like tree identification, how to plant and look after trees. The trees are split into 4 groups (we do not know how many of each type of tree just that we have 105 from each group).
Wild Harvest – Blackthorn, Elder, Hazel, Rowan, Crab Apple and Dog wood.
Wildlife – Hawthorn, Common Oak, Blackthorn, Silver Birch, Rowan and Hazel.
The ECO team have decided to create labels, information on the different trees and instructions on how to plant them. If this is something you would like, please let Tracy know. Keep an eye on both the school’s and community company’s social medial accounts for what the pupils have been learning and practical guides on tree care.
